History at Mary Immaculate High School encourages pupils to be curious about the past and to understand how it has shaped the world in which we live today. Throughout Key Stage 3, pupils explore a wide range of fascinating periods, people and events while developing important historical skills such as analysing evidence, evaluating different interpretations, explaining causes and consequences, and forming well-supported judgements.

Our aim is not simply for pupils to learn about what happened in the past, but to become confident and independent thinkers. History encourages pupils to question the information they encounter, consider different perspectives and use evidence to reach their own conclusions. These skills are valuable both within the classroom and in everyday life.

​

At Key Stage 4, pupils follow the WJEC GCSE History specification, building upon the knowledge and skills developed throughout Key Stage 3. Pupils investigate a diverse range of historical periods and themes and learn to work confidently with historical sources and interpretations. Regular assessment and examination practice help pupils to develop the knowledge, writing skills and confidence required to succeed at GCSE.

Studying History provides pupils with a wide range of transferable skills, including critical thinking, communication, research, analysis and the ability to construct a convincing argument. These skills provide an excellent foundation for further study and for a broad range of future careers.

Above all, History at Mary Immaculate aims to encourage pupils to ask questions about the world around them. By understanding the people, events and ideas that shaped the past, pupils are better equipped to understand the present and play an informed role in the future.
